Abstract – Not speaking despite wearing hearing aids
Akshay was diagnosed with profound hearing loss at the age of 2 ½ years but made minimal progress in speech when he came first to Samvaad at the age of 3 ½ years. With the right hearing aids and Speech Therapy, he has made rapid progress and can now wish others a “Happy Birthday aunty!”
Takeaway Note
The maternal reflective method used with Akshay has been proven effective in teaching language to hard-of-hearing children for over five decades. Speech Therapy is given to correct the pronunciation of the sounds, with intensive auditory training to teach the use of residual hearing.
